“Update from New York,” Diane announced after hanging up her phone and stepping back into the conference room. “Agents Owens found a flash drive on the senator. Same message as our scenes. ‘Pay Attention.’ It’s being analyzed now.”

“Evolution,” Bonnie mused. “From physical evidence to digital. They’re adapting their methodology while maintaining the message.”

“Speaking of evidence…” Rivers turned his laptop so we could all see the screen. “Been correlating cases where our victims crossed paths. Now that I’ve added the senator to the formula, the overlap is... significant.”

We spent the next hour diving into connections that spanned decades… court decisions, corporate settlements, and healthcare policies that had enriched the few at the expense of the many. Each revelation added another layer to what was beginning to look less like individual corruption and more like systematic manipulation of justice itself.

“Jesus,” Robbie muttered as Rivers outlined another financial pattern. “How did no one catch this before?”

“People probably did,” Price said grimly. “But what happens to whistleblowers? To investigators who dig too deep? The system protects itself.”

“Until now,” I added. “Until someone decided to break the system’s rules entirely.”

Diane straightened, her expression sharpening. “Whatever their justification, whatever wrongs they think they’re righting, we have a job to do. Four people are dead. More will follow unless we stop this.”

She was right, of course. However broken the system might be, murder wasn’t the answer. It couldn’t be the answer, or we were no better than the corruption we fought.

But as we divided up tasks and responsibilities, as we prepared to dive back into the darkness our killer wanted us to see, I couldn’t help wondering what happened when the rules themselves became weapons. When justice had been so thoroughly corrupted that operating outside it started to look like the only path forward?

“Let’s lay it all out,” Diane said suddenly. “Start with Whitfield.”

Rivers’ fingers danced across his keyboard, bringing up the judge’s file. Crime scene photos appeared on screen, each one a carefully composed snapshot of corruption’s consequences.

“Sterling Whitfield III,” I recited, the details burned into my memory. “Found in his office between midnight and two AM. Garroted, professional technique. Hidden drawer containing evidence of systematic corruption, with a neon Post-it asking if we were paying attention.”

“The timing’s important,” Robbie added, leaning forward. “Killer chose late at night when the building would be empty except for cleaning staff. They knew the schedule and knew exactly when the body would be found.”

“Then we have Salvatore Fucci,” Bonnie continued, pulling up her forensics report. “Corporate lawyer, killed in his home between one and three PM. The same murder weapon and the same professional technique. But this time...”

“This time, they displayed the evidence openly,” Clyde finished. “No more hidden drawers. Just papers laid out like an exhibit.”

Rivers highlighted a series of transactions on his screen. “Whitfield and Fucci had direct financial connections. Every major case Fucci won in Whitfield’s court was preceded by significant payments through offshore accounts.”

“But Petit’s different,” I said, watching the data scroll past. “Cynthia Petit, CEO of HealthPlus.
